Places to visit
Exideuil
Exideuil, the nearest town to us at Domaine de Tabary, is known for its beautiful countryside setting and traditional stone houses. It is dominated by its historic Château d'Excideuil, which dates back to the 11th Century.
Exideuil preserves a strong sense of history and local heritage, and offers guests a perfect escape for a Dordogne holiday.
Périgueux, the historic capital of the Dordogne, is renowned for its rich heritage and beautiful medieval architecture. The stunning Saint-Front Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city holds regular markets (Wednesdays and Saturdays), and there are many restaurants to sample local produce and specialities.
Brantôme
Brantôme is a small town, and often referred to as the “Venice of the Périgord” due to it being surrounded by the Dronne River. It is best known for its Benedictine abbey, founded in the 8th century, with one of the oldest bell towers in France.
Brantôme is a popular destination for tourists wanting to explore the Périgord Vert region.
Family Friendly
Canoeing and Paddleboarding
Canoeing offers something for all the family and there are numerous places to do this family friendly activity across the Dordogne. When you arrive with us we’re happy to make some recommendations depending on how far you want to drive, canoe and the sights you want to see.
If you have children who love to be outdoors and want a bit of thrill-seeking, there are a few high-ropes courses and adventure parks to visit. About 40 mins away is the Parcs de Loisir L’Appel de la Foret but more options can be found on the Dordogne Valley website.
Prehistoric Caves
There are many ‘grottes’ across the Dordogne with different experiences on offer. There are of course the world famous Lascaux (approx 45 mins away) but much closer are the Grottes de Tortoirac (just 10 mins away). Over the years we have visited a few ourselves, or have had guests visit ones we haven’t so are happy to make recommendations when you are staying with us.
Historic Attractions
With the château dating back to the 11th century, entry to this historic site is free. Just 1.5km away, this landmark is walkable from our holiday cottages so perfect if you want a day without the car.
Today part of the castle is privately owned but the rest is owned by the commune, hence being free to access all year round.
Château de Hautefort
With the world renowned Château de Hautefort just 20 minutes drive away, it’s a sight not to be missed.
Inside explore the elegant architecture and grand interior with richly decorated rooms. Outside, enjoy walking through its gardens through terraces, fountains, and vibrant flowerbeds.
These beautiful historic gardens are well worth a visit if you’re staying with us at Domaine de Tabary. Just over an hours drive away, Marqueyssac Gardens have over 6km of winding pathways with meticulous topiary, rockeries and stone cabins and one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Dordogne.
As well as the gardens, there are activities to keep children entertained such as climbing and regular events through the year.
